Joyce Buckland: known as Joy, or Sister Buckland to her many nursing students, was a lifelong compassionate and philanthropic person.  She was a career Nurse, initially training at Ballarat Base Hospital and then studying further as an Orthopaedic Nurse at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.  She had several positions in hospitals overseas including the UK and New Zealand.  This also sustained her passion for travel.

She moved to Geelong to take up a position in the Children’s Ward at Geelong Hospital and assisted in the treatment of adult and child burn victims.  Joy taught nursing at Geelong Hospital and became the Director of Nursing there.  She was instrumental in the formation of the Bachelor of Nursing at Deakin University and lectured there in the 1980s.

She also dedicated many hours to the underprivileged and disabled people of the Geelong area and was on the Board of Karingal for over ten years including time as President.

She was a very generous donor to organisations that were involved in Medical Research and those helping people to obtain medical assistance after Natural Disasters.

Her significant legacy to the Geelong Community Foundation will continue to help the people of Geelong long past her lifetime.
