Yesterday our CEO Amy Waters visited Our Village (previously Geelong Mums) to recognise the important work of their volunteers as part of National Volunteers Week celebrations.

In the past 12 months, Geelong-based Our Village volunteers contributed more than 21,141 hours of time, sorted 97,037 kg of donations and lovingly prepared 23,447 items that were distributed to 3,485 families, impacting 8,205 babies and children in our community.

“Volunteers are the heartbeat of the Geelong community - quietly, generously and tirelessly shaping a more connected and fair community,” said Amy.

“Without the contribution of volunteers many of our grant partners would not be able to operate or have the impact they do.”

A huge thank you to everyone who volunteers in our community 💙

Last week our Program and Impact Manager Charlotte Walker attended EdConnect Australia’s Volunteer Awards Ceremony, a special event celebrating the invaluable contributions of EdConnect volunteers and the meaningful difference they are making within school communities.

EdConnect works alongside schools in lower socioeconomic areas across our region, connecting dedicated volunteers with students who benefit from additional classroom support and one-on-one mentoring. These efforts aim to improve literacy and numeracy outcomes and foster stronger educational engagement.

Since 2020, the Foundation has awarded EdConnect four grants and is proud to partner with an organisation building a more equitable community.

The ceremony also highlighted how deeply the program enriches the lives of its volunteers. Many shared that being part of the school environment has enhanced their mental health, sense of purpose, and overall wellbeing.

A special congratulations to local volunteer Reno Demicoli, who supports students at Lara Primary School and was honoured as Mentor Volunteer of the Year, well done, Reno!

The Geelong Community Foundation is proud to support the aspirations of 23 outstanding individuals through more than $35,000 in scholarships this year.

These awards span general education scholarships as well as those focused on agriculture and horticulture, reflecting our ongoing commitment to learning, growth, and community development.

Yesterday, our CEO Amy Waters visited Farm My School to present the Rural Education and Retraining Scholarship to Alex Barrios, one of the program’s dedicated farmer trainees.

“It was a fantastic opportunity to meet this year’s scholarship applicants. It’s inspiring to see their passion and determination to engage with their education and pursue their goals,” she said.

“We are honoured to play a small part in supporting these individuals on their journeys and hope these scholarships help empower them to continue striving towards their educational and career aspirations.”

On Monday, our CEO Amy Waters and Program and Impact Manager Charlotte Walker attended Respect in Action, a regional showcase highlighting powerful local and state-wide initiatives aimed at building safe, respectful, and inclusive sporting communities.

The event featured inspiring examples of how sporting clubs and regional facilities are advancing gender equality and fostering respectful relationships across our region.

The Geelong Community Foundation is proud to support the Respect Starts Here program through a two-year grant in partnership with The Sexual Assault & Family Violence Centre.

“This important initiative recognises the vital role community sport can play in promoting gender equality and preventing gender-based violence,” said Amy.

“It was especially rewarding to see the progress of Respect Starts Here, including the premiere of a new video series and supporting resources that demonstrate the critical role community clubs can play in creating cultural change and responding to gender-based violence.”
