Growing More Than Veggies: How P500 Donors Are Helping Young People Flourish at Farm My School

Farm My School Trainees: Paul, Charlee and Alex

Thanks to the generosity and vision of our P500 donor community, three young people from our region are finding purpose, building skills, and shaping their futures – through soil, sweat, and hands-on learning at Farm My School.

This traineeship program is more than a qualification. It’s a chance for young people to connect with their community, grow confidence through real work, and discover new ways to learn. In a world where some students struggle to find meaningful, purpose-driven pathways, this experience is having a profound and lasting impact.

Alex: Science, Soil, and a Sense of Belonging

Alex, a Year 12 student at Geelong High School, joined the program after being encouraged by Professor Felice Jacka from Deakin University’s Food and Mood Centre, who introduced him to the traineeship during a school project.

“She told me about the traineeship, and I was really interested in the science of agriculture.”

Now working two days a week on the farm while completing his Certificate III in Horticulture, Alex is thriving. He spends his time preparing beds, harvesting produce, starting seedlings – and learning how soil, science and sustainability intersect.

“It’s peaceful here. You just hear the birds from the reserve and not much else. It’s relaxing – and I get to work with like-minded people.”

With aspirations to study agronomy or agricultural science at university, Alex credits the traineeship with helping him find direction.

“I’ve learned that I enjoy working outdoors, I like working with others, and I enjoy learning new things.”

Alex’s favourite vegetable: Brocco-flower – a ‘sciency’ hybrid between broccoli and cauliflower (of course).

How the program makes him feel: Relaxed, inspired, and confident in his future

Paul: The Power of Purpose and Routine

Paul’s introduction to Farm My School came through a free period at school – when he decided to sit in on a horticulture class instead of wasting time. It was a small decision that led to something big.

“I’ve always been interested in nature and gardening. This job gives me exercise, social time, education, and money at the end of the day.”

Paul now works Wednesdays and Thursdays at the farm. He’s embraced the physical side of farming – soil prep, composting, weeding, and harvesting – with calm focus and quiet pride.

“The most surprising thing I’ve learned is how much work goes into getting food to people – and how little some plants need to thrive.”

Though still exploring his next steps, Paul is confident that the skills and qualification he’s gained will carry him forward.

“It’s improved my life overall – physically and mentally.”

Paul’s favourite vegetable: Onions – “the foundation of every dish”

How the program makes him feel: Healthy, grounded, and better all around

Charlee: Creativity, Confidence, and New Ways to Learn

Charlee began as a volunteer – helping on the farm during snacks and lunch breaks. When the traineeship opened up, she was one of many applicants – and secured a coveted spot.

“I hate sitting at a desk. This keeps me moving, outdoors. I feel active and healthy.”

Charlee now leads the Friday veggie box packing, flips compost and brings creativity to everything from crop planning to food styling for socials. She was recently awarded a Miles Family Scholarship through Geelong Community Foundation to explore permaculture, landscaping, or garden design.

“Because I’m dyslexic, learning in a classroom was hard. This helps me learn in new ways – and it’s helping me stay in school.”

“I’ll finish my course and turn 18 with a qualification in hand. That feels really good.”

Charlee’s favourite vegetable: Cauliflower – with chilli and mayo

How the program makes her feel: Capable, energised, and proud of her progress

What Grows When You Give

Across these three unique stories, a shared message shines through: this traineeship is helping young people feel confident, capable, and connected to a future they’re excited about.
